Carnegie Mellon University announced the launch of the Commodities Quant Lab on October 22, 2026, to explore the application of data, mathematics, and artificial intelligence in global commodity markets. Led by director Ilia Bouchouev, the lab operates as a joint venture between the Master of Science in Computational Finance program and the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Focus on Global Commodities

Carnegie Mellon University launched the Commodities Quant Lab to explore how data, mathematics, and artificial intelligence can help solve challenges in global commodity markets. Oil, natural gas, copper, wheat, and coffee are among the commodities influencing energy costs, manufacturing, food prices, and global trade.

Ilia Bouchouev, director of the lab, stated that commodity markets sit at the intersection of economics, mathematics, technology, and global supply chains. Bouchouev has more than 20 years of experience in global derivatives trading and risk management, teaches energy trading at New York University, and authored the book "Virtual Barrels."

Collaboration and Leadership

The lab brings together faculty, students, and industry leaders to address challenges in commodity derivatives trading, market structure, modeling, and risk management through advanced quantitative methods, data science, and machine learning. Robert Simon, executive director of the MSCF program, noted that the lab will serve as a unique hub for applied research and industry-sponsored initiatives.

Corporate sponsors and industry partners will help inform the research agenda by proposing research themes, supporting applied initiatives, and engaging directly with students and faculty. The lab will also welcome collaborations with other universities and members of the broader commodities community.
