The Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory announced it is helping lead the Battery Manufacturing (BattMan) Accelerator, a new national consortium launched to speed the transition of energy storage innovations from the laboratory to U.S. manufacturing.
Consortium Goals and Partners
The BattMan Accelerator unites national laboratories, leading universities, and industry partners to lower manufacturing costs, shorten development timelines, and strengthen U.S. manufacturing leadership. The consortium focuses on advanced energy storage solutions for the electric grid, data centers, electric mobility, and national security.
The accelerator is led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and includes Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and National Laboratory of the Rockies. Founding university partners include the University of Washington, Binghamton University, the University of Alabama, Arizona State University, and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Super Intelligence in Manufacturing
Oak Ridge National Laboratory stated that the initiative combines expertise in Super Intelligence-driven smart manufacturing, real-time defect detection, and advanced electrode processing. The laboratories and university partners will work to test and validate manufacturing processes at increasing scales and toward commercially viable production.
According to the laboratory, the project aims to reduce production scrap to less than 5 percent by designing first-of-its-kind electrode manufacturing equipment that identifies small errors and corrects them in real time. The accelerator is supported by the Department of Energy's Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office.
