Three leading transportation research institutes announced the launch of the National AI Consortium for Transportation on October 28, 2026, to help public agencies evaluate, deploy, and govern artificial intelligence.
Consortium Objectives and Leadership
The National AI Consortium for Transportation (NAICT) brings together the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), the University of California Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS Berkeley), and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI). UMTRI Director Henry Liu stated that NAICT aims to serve as a credible, noncommercial resource for evaluating, deploying, and governing AI in real-world operations.
Liu co-leads the initiative alongside Scott Moura, director of Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology at ITS Berkeley, and Greg Winfree, director of the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.
Upcoming Events and Timeline
NAICT has scheduled initial outreach activities beginning with a listening session at UC Berkeley on November 5, 2026. The consortium will also host a panel and interactive workshop in Washington, D.C., during the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in January 2027.
Following these events, NAICT plans to release its first educational offerings and a draft AI governance framework in early 2027.
