On October 12, 2026, Amazon Web Services announced Lambda Web Functions, a new serverless compute primitive that allows code to handle HTTP requests directly.

Direct HTTP Request Handling

Amazon Web Services introduced Lambda Web Functions, allowing developers to use frameworks such as Express or Hono without adapters or custom configuration. The code listens on a port and handles requests directly as it would on any HTTP server.

With this launch, existing Lambda functions are being renamed to Lambda Event Functions. Amazon Web Services stated this is a naming change only that requires no code changes or redeployments for existing functions.

Runtime and Regional Availability

Lambda Web Functions currently supports the Node.js runtime. A single warm execution environment can serve multiple concurrent requests, which reduces cold starts, and users can stream results incrementally with native HTTP streaming.

Users can configure Lambda Web Functions using the AWS Lambda API, Agent Toolkit for AWS, AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, AWS CloudFormation, AWS SAM, AWS CDK, or AWS SDKs. The feature is available today in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), and Europe (Ireland).
