Speaking at the Broadband Development Congress during Network X 2026 in Vienna, Huawei Optical Business Product Line President Bob Chen outlined strategies for network growth in the artificial intelligence era. According to Huawei, network architecture and business models must adapt to the rapid expansion of AI services and data centers.

Three Principles for Network Growth

During the Broadband Development Congress in Vienna, Huawei Optical Business Product Line President Bob Chen delivered a speech on network value in the AI era. Chen stated that large AI models now approach 10 trillion parameters, while token consumption has grown nearly 50-fold over the past year.

To address shifting connection requirements and quality demands, Huawei proposed three guiding principles, known as the three 'Rs': rebuilding network architecture, changing the business model, and redefining network operations and maintenance.

Rebuilding Network Architecture

Chen stated that network planning and construction must center around AI service needs and the deployment of AI data centers (AIDCs). With AI development, the number of AIDCs has grown nearly tenfold, shifting traffic drivers from population size to available computing power.

Huawei advocates moving away from administrative divisions toward an AIDC-oriented architecture that utilizes direct mesh connections. This approach aims to create deterministic latency zones at 1, 5, and 20 milliseconds to support rapid service deployment.

Reshaping Business Models and Maintenance

In the enterprise segment, Huawei suggested operators expand dedicated line offerings from pure bandwidth to a multi-dimensional offering of 'bandwidth + latency + reliability' using technologies like OXC, ASON, and quantum encryption. For home broadband, operators can shift toward whole-home Wi-Fi and intelligent home applications driven by AI agents.

Additionally, Chen noted that AI-driven network operations can automatically optimize Wi-Fi performance, dynamically adjust power consumption by over 20%, and streamline fault resolution across self-repair, remote operations, and on-site visits.
