On October 22, 2026, Dairyland Power Cooperative and Applied Atomics announced a Letter of Intent to evaluate deploying small modular nuclear reactors at Dairyland's Genoa Site in Wisconsin.
Evaluating Small Modular Reactors
Dairyland Power Cooperative and Applied Atomics, Inc. signed a Letter of Intent to explore deploying Applied Atomics' small modular reactor technology at Dairyland's Genoa Site in southwest Wisconsin, according to the companies. Under the agreement, the two parties will analyze the feasibility of locating one or more small modular reactors at the site.
Dairyland will explore securing the resulting carbon-free power through a power purchase agreement from Applied Atomics. Brent Ridge, Dairyland president and CEO, stated that the agreement allows the organization to take a closer look at the technology to understand how it may complement their evolving generation portfolio.
Technology and Industry Background
Applied Atomics' scalable power plants incorporate mature, light-water reactor technology and are designed to produce 100 MWe per unit. The company holds an exclusive land-based license to use mPower, a pressurized light water reactor designed and manufactured by BWXT.
Dairyland's Genoa Site previously hosted a now-decommissioned 50 megawatt nuclear power plant and a 345 megawatt coal plant, which was retired in 2021. An Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is currently located at the site.
