The Republic of Uzbekistan signed the Artemis Accords on Monday during a ceremony in Samarkand, becoming the 77th nation to join the civil space exploration framework. Minister of Foreign Affairs Bakhtiyor Saidov signed on behalf of the country during a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Expanding Space Cooperation
NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson noted that the signing comes as the agency works to build a Moon Base and establish an enduring lunar presence. Uzbekistan has increasingly engaged with NASA and the international space community to advance its national space program and industry.
Signing the Artemis Accords means committing to explore peaceably and transparently, to render aid to those in need, to enable access to scientific data that all of humanity can learn from, to ensure activities do not interfere with those of others, and to preserve historically significant sites and artifacts.
Upcoming Space Milestones
Uzbek students are currently working to develop and launch the country's first CubeSat, or small satellite technology demonstration, by 2028. In early October, NASA officials met with representatives from Uzbekistan's Ministry of Digital Technologies and Uzbekistan's space agency, Uzcosmos, during the International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Türkiye.
Uzbekistan is scheduled to host the annual global space event in 2028. NASA stated that more countries are expected to sign the Artemis Accords in the months and years ahead.
