Google on September 29, 2026 outlined a set of new and upcoming Google Play subscription capabilities for Android developers, including multi-seat subscription purchases, prepaid metered billing for usage-based services, mixed carts and cross-developer bundles. The post, written by Google Play senior product manager Sheenam Mittal, said many of the features are available or rolling out through an Early Access Program.

What Google is adding

Google said Play is introducing Multi-Quantity Subscription Purchase, which it describes as allowing users to make multiple subscription purchases in a single transaction and assign them as seats or subscriptions to team members or students. The company pitched the feature at productivity, EdTech and generative AI developers.

For apps with variable computing costs, Google said Usage-Based Billing enables prepaid metered billing in which users automatically top up their balance whenever it falls below a set threshold. According to Google, this keeps service uninterrupted while protecting developer margins.

Two packaging features round out the monetization changes. Mixed Carts lets developers process an auto-renewing base subscription alongside one-time products in a single API call and unified checkout sheet, Google said, replacing what were previously two separate checkout flows. Cross-Developer Bundling lets developers create and sell a hard bundle of two or more complementary subscriptions in their own catalog, including offerings from partner developers.

Retention and payment-recovery tools

Google said the In-App Messaging API is available now to all developers and can be used to prompt users to fix a payment decline immediately and to notify them of upcoming price changes.

The company also described Dynamic Grace Period, which it said uses machine learning and heuristic models to tailor the grace period duration for individual subscribers after a payment decline. Google said Play automatically adjusts the subsequent account hold duration so the total configured recovery window is preserved without client-side code changes.

Other tools include Retention Offers, which present developer-funded incentives such as a discount inside the Play Store cancellation flow; Plan Change, which suggests a lower-priced tier; and Subscription Winback Offers, which Google said reach lapsed subscribers directly on the Google Play Store rather than through email or push notifications.

What Google says runs automatically

Beyond features configured in Play Console, Google said Play runs what it called zero-lift optimizations without developer code, including smart payment retries, automatically cycling through backup payment methods for opted-in users, and context-aware reminders during grace periods and account hold.

The company also said built-in fraud and abuse prevention systems block bad actors from exploiting promotional offers or manipulating billing cycles. These are Google's own descriptions of its systems; the post did not include performance data or adoption numbers.

Availability

Google said many of the features are currently available or rolling out through its Early Access Program, meaning they are in active testing with select partners to gather feedback before wider rollout in Play Console.

Developers who work with a Google Play partner manager can reach out to express interest as programs open, the company said, pointing others to its Google Play Billing subscriptions documentation.
