The European Space Agency published a documentary video on October 2, 2026 recounting ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot's three spacewalks outside the International Space Station, during which the agency says she spent 19 hours and 42 minutes in the vacuum of space.

What ESA described

According to ESA, Adenot performed three extravehicular activities, or EVAs, in less than 15 days, accumulating 19 hours and 42 minutes outside the International Space Station.

The agency said the spacewalks were her first steps into space, and that they were "only the beginning" for the astronaut.

Work carried out

ESA said that across the three spacewalks, Adenot and her crewmates replaced critical Station hardware, installed a new communications antenna, carried out maintenance and prepared experiments for future work.

The agency said the crew did so while adapting to the challenges of working in the extreme environment of space.

From rookie to EV1

ESA said Adenot progressed from her very first spacewalk to leading her third as EV1, the lead spacewalker role.

The agency characterized the sequence as a demonstration of what it takes to work beyond Earth, citing technical skill, perseverance, adaptability and trust in the supporting teams. Those are ESA's characterizations of the mission.

About the release

The item is an 8 minute 40 second documentary video credited to the European Space Agency and published under the ESA Standard Licence. ESA listed it under Science & Exploration, with tags including Human Spaceflight, Epsilon and Astronaut spacesuit.

ESA said the video includes third party content that shall not be modified, and that captions and subtitles are available, automatically generated by YouTube, with a non-YouTube version offered through a download button. The agency did not state the dates of the individual spacewalks in the item.
