Researchers at the California Institute of Technology and the American Institute of Mathematics are building a new artificial intelligence platform designed specifically for mathematicians. Announced on October 7, 2026, the software aims to combine AI capabilities with human mathematical research practices.

Bridging AI and Mathematics

Caltech said the project is a collaboration between the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM)—which has been housed on the Caltech campus since 2023—and Caltech's Information Science and Technology initiative (IST). Project leaders include Sergei Gukov, Yisong Yue, and Pietro Perona.

According to the researchers, the platform will act as a companion for mathematicians exploring new ideas, identifying connections between problems, suggesting strategies, and handling routine technical work. The system also integrates the ability to convert human mathematical reasoning directly into Lean code.

Timeline and Testing

Caltech stated that a preliminary version of the platform will be up and running for teams of mathematicians to test in a few months. Visiting mathematicians attending week-long sessions at AIM will be invited to provide feedback to Caltech AI engineers.

Gukov said the team expects to have sufficient data within a year to conduct a radical redesign, which will include training a new AI system. The project has received initial commitments for support from Paul Stahura and Rahim Noorani.
