The UK government announced a series of artificial intelligence safety initiatives on October 12, 2026, including frontier model evaluations and expanded cyber defense programs.

Model Evaluations and AI Security

According to the UK Government, the AI Security Institute is conducting rigorous evaluations on advanced AI models to identify risks early and test safeguards. Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan delivered these details in a speech at Imperial College London on October 12, 2026.

Narayan stated that the government has been working with the US government and labs to retain access to powerful AI models before release. As part of this effort, researchers are currently evaluating models including Gemini 4 Argon.

Expanding Government Cyber Defences

The UK Government reported that across two government pilots, frontier artificial intelligence helped identify and address more than a thousand vulnerabilities and other threats to public services. Additionally, the central vulnerability-monitoring service reduced the time taken to fix identified weaknesses from 50 days to just eight.

Narayan announced that the government will soon launch the National Cyber Action Plan. Officials will also urgently use frontier AI capabilities to find weaknesses within government systems before attackers can exploit them.
