The National University of Singapore said on Oct. 1, 2026 that its Department of Geography has introduced a Geospatial Intelligence Cross-Disciplinary Programme (GIX), which the university describes as the first bachelor's degree of its kind in Asia, starting in 2026 with a pioneer batch of 28 students.
What NUS announced
The announcement was part of a broader university communication about NUS Geography's subject rankings, curriculum changes and research directions. Its technology-related elements center on a new undergraduate geospatial program, expanded graduate offerings and sensor-based environmental research.
NUS said the Department of Geography placed first in the 2026 ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, for the second consecutive year, and fourth in the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The geospatial intelligence program
According to NUS, the GIX program is offered in collaboration with the School of Computing and allows students to explore geospatial data, computing and artificial intelligence, referred to in the announcement as GeoAI.
The university said the program is intended to help students understand and respond to issues ranging from climate change and smart city design to urban planning and business planning.
NUS also said new interdisciplinary courses launched under the NUS College of Humanities and Sciences cover topics including clean and just energy, earth studies, and the motivations behind environmental decisions.
New degrees and stackable master's programs
Students will have the option to pursue a new Second Major in Environmental Science for Sustainability from January 2027, the university said.
NUS said it built on the Master of Science in Applied GIS launched in 2015 and the MSc in Climate Change and Sustainability in 2024, and that an upcoming Master of Social Sciences in Planetary Health and Wellbeing is slated for introduction in 2027. All of the department's taught master's programs are stackable, allowing students to take a graduate certificate before building toward a graduate diploma and full master's degree, according to the announcement.
Sensing research in Singapore
NUS said a "Tree Resilience Automatic Sensing System" (TRASS), developed by Dr Remi Luo and his team and pictured at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, continuously monitors how trees respond to environmental stresses.
The university said Luo is leading a project funded by the National Parks Board to monitor Singapore's green spaces over the long term to generate insights that inform climate-resilient urban planning. Professor Matthias Roth is collaborating with the National Environment Agency on research to improve forecasting of weather and climate conditions, NUS said.
Professor David Taylor, Head of the Department of Geography, said: "Modern geography sits at the intersection of people, places and the environment, helping us understand not only how the world is changing, but also how these changes affect the way we live, work and shape our communities."
