NASA announced on October 21, 2026, that the Perseverance rover set a new record for the farthest distance driven on another celestial body. On Sol 2006 (October 11, 2026), the rover's odometer reached 45.22 kilometers (28.10 miles) on Mars.

Perseverance Reaches Milestone on Mars

According to NASA, Perseverance reached the 45.22-kilometer milestone on Sol 2006, breaking the record for the farthest distance driven on another celestial body. Its engineering twin on Earth received a plaque from Guinness World Records celebrating the achievement.

Two months prior, on Sol 1947, the odometer sat about 200 meters away from the milestone. The rover spent time executing short drives to perform rock abrasions and proximity science on ancient rock outcrops before moving on to a new site and passing the record.

Terrain Navigation and Software Upgrades

NASA stated that the team raised the rover's tilt limit to 24 degrees and reduced the required belly pan clearance to 20 centimeters (about 7.9 inches) after running thousands of simulations to handle tough terrain. The team also updated braking software to avoid rock hazards, nearly doubled steer motor current limits, and implemented flight software updates featuring dynamic slip tables to model expected slip.

Additionally, the team introduced an autonomous drive capability called onboard Global Localization (GBLC). GBLC repurposes the high-speed commercial processor inside the Ingenuity Helicopter Base Station to compare ground and orbital imagery, helping the rover locate itself in global coordinates at the end of a drive.

Radiation Hardening and Future Plans

Because the Ingenuity Helicopter Base Station coprocessor lacks radiation hardening against the Martian surface environment, it is vulnerable to transient bit flips caused by the thin atmosphere and lack of a global magnetosphere. NASA reported that the team developed an effective software-based approach to radiation hardening to protect the system.

Looking forward to longer drives and planning with fewer resources, the team is also exploring the use of generative SI to help propose solutions to steer AutoNav along strategic paths.
