GitHub detailed its restructured bug bounty program during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, highlighting a permanent VIP tier for top-performing researchers. The program shifts focus to reward submission quality over sheer volume.

VIP Program and Payouts

GitHub restructured its bug bounty program around a core shift to incentivize better submissions rather than higher volume. As part of this change, the company formalized a permanent, invite-only VIP program for researchers who consistently deliver high-impact work.

VIP participants receive payouts of up to $30,000 or more for critical findings, faster response times on submissions, and early previews of beta products before public launch.

Qualification and Methodology

Researchers can qualify for the VIP program by accumulating one critical, two high, four medium, or seven low-severity resolved findings. GitHub spotlighted top contributor @vaib25vicky, who focuses on authorization and access control research.

When using AI in security research, @vaib25vicky noted that AI acts as an assistant to save time, but stressed that researchers must always verify AI outputs and never submit unconfirmed findings.

What to do

  • Always verify AI-generated findings and never submit a finding you have not confirmed yourself.
  • Report security findings through HackerOne.
