Amazon Web Services said on September 28, 2026 that Claude Sonnet 5.5 is now available on AWS, accessible through Amazon Bedrock and through Claude Platform on AWS.
What AWS announced
In a What's New post, AWS said it now offers Claude Sonnet 5.5, describing it as "a smarter and more efficient Sonnet" that delivers what the company called a clear leap forward on coding and knowledge work, at a lower cost per task for most work and at faster speed.
AWS positioned the model as a step up from Sonnet 5 and, in its words, "a natural upgrade for teams already building on Sonnet." The performance, cost and speed characterizations are the company's claims; AWS did not publish benchmark figures or pricing in the announcement.
Claimed capabilities
According to AWS, Sonnet 5.5 is stronger for coding and completes well-scoped tasks as part of a larger coding strategy, such as building and fixing features with Claude in the same session or verifying output against requirements.
The company also said the model produces ready-to-share knowledge work, listing 1-pagers, diagrams and summary slides as well as document edits and spreadsheet cleanup.
Two ways to access the model
AWS said customers have two access routes. Amazon Bedrock provides the model's capabilities while keeping customer data within AWS infrastructure with regional data residency, and offers a unified service with AWS-managed features including Guardrails and Knowledge Bases.
The second route, Claude Platform on AWS, gives direct access to Anthropic's native platform experience and capabilities through the AWS Console. AWS said developers can build, test and deploy with the same APIs, features and console experience they would get working with Anthropic directly, unified with AWS billing and authentication.
